What is an apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships offer training to gain the qualifications you need for the job you want and the chance to gain valuable work experience along the way. If you’re looking for an alternative to college or university, or want to kick-start your career in a particular industry and need to prove your abilities to employers, an apprenticeship could be exactly what you’re looking for.

Apprenticeships are training programmes that can be used for new and existing employees from age 16, which are undertaken in the workplace and combined with off-the-job learning.

Why consider an apprentice?

The Government Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has put a timescale for all UK homes to have a Smart Meter installed by the end of 2019, therefore there is opportunity for appropriately trained and qualified trades people who can install Smart Meters. This includes replacement of the current Electricity & Gas meter with a Smart Meters that can display the combination of both energy sources and in-turn reduce energy demand hence reducing household utility bills.

Smart Meters enable consumers to manage their energy, save money and obtain bills based on usage not estimates. Smart Meter will also be able to link to the energy provider and inform them of real-time usage & save on meter readers to visit each property.

The apprenticeship program will give you the qualifications and skills necessary to be in a trade that will see significant in demand for labour.

What is involved in a Smart Metering Qualification / Apprenticeship?

At PQMS we offer Smart Metering Qualifications in line with the City & Guilds 7428 Scheme and the Energy & Utility Skills Register.

Our smart Meter apprenticeship qualification offers a whole range of training courses including qualifications to City and Guilds 7428 Scheme to ensure we help deliver appropriately qualified and skilled workforce to meet the requirements to address this market.

To support this training PQMS cover essential areas such as communication and customer service. The employer can choose the qualification and training in specialist knowledge and skills for the following areas.

Level 2 Diploma in Smart Metering - Power
Level 2 Diploma in Smart Metering - Gas
Level 2 Diploma in Smart Metering - Dual Fuel.

Our training will provide the student with qualification and skills with an appreciation of Gas, Electrical and Communications systems, as well as full competency in Meter Installation and swaps. Our training includes mandatory units including:

  • • Working safely in the energy and utilities sector
  • • Using and communicating technical information in the energy and utilities sector
  • • Install and commission communication systems for smart meters
  • • Install single phase meter and associated equipment
  • • Applied practices and principles for installing low pressure natural gas smart meters up to U6 only
  • • Prepare, install and commission low pressure natural gas smart meter
  • • Low pressure gas smart meter tightness testing and direct purging.

Further training modules, which may not form part of the qualification, can provide additional competencies for example, fitting 3 phase power and intermediate pressure gas meters and can be added to the training.

The training for this qualification will be undertaken at one of our centres using bespoke facilities which included well developed and equipped practical areas.


Your employer, will supplement this training with on the job training and field base work placements (buddying). You will also build an experience portfolio of the work you have performed in the field to evidence their learning and development achievement as part of the overall training. At the end of their training each you will undergo assessments, both in a recognised and approved assessment centre and evidence based field experience and performance. On successful completion of the course, the student will gain a City & Guilds qualification.
